Children's book design

ROLE Author, Designer, Illustrator

YEAR Jun 2022

SCOPE Story writing and editing, Book design and layout, Illustrations, Printmaking

This book is an outcome of a course project on children’s book design and illustration. I wrote the story as part of the course and illustrated it with hand-pulled woodcut prints enlarged and composed digitally.

"A dance-loving girl who wishes to dance with peacocks in the rain. But the peacocks are nowhere to be found, and the frog is unable to guide her. The ecological crisis of the bees must be solved to connect the dots to fulfil her desire of dancing."

Sketches and flatplan

Colour mixing trials; Prints kept to dry; Sample prints without the outline

The illustrations draw inspiration from the art style of Ethel Spowers from the Grosvenor School of Printmaking in the UK. My aim was to create a memorable visual experience through illustrations in a new medium. The simplicity of the layouts goes back to the style of Nehru Bal Pustakalay children's books.

Optical colour mixing was used to achieve the layered rich colours using minimum pressure on the paper. The prints were composed as spreads in Photoshop and then made into a book in InDesign. The book includes a ‘worksheet’ spread—a space where the child can draw and own the book through their personal expression. Children are known to make art in books they read. A spread designed for this purpose makes way for their creativity.
